Where do you buy your cheese? My favorite cheese shop is Hirt's in Detroit's Eastern Market. It's an hour+ drive, so I usually shop at Hill's cheese in Lansing, MI.

Re: Favorite Cheesemonger?
Sat, December 30, 2006 - 11:57 AMI do not eat cheese the way I used to when I was in France, that's for sure...
I used to eat cheese every single day...
Anyway, it's okay, now that I am in the US I have a different diet and treat myself sometimes with some cheeses I find at Trader Joe's mostly...
I can't afford much.
But when I can or if I could the greatest place around in Santa Cruz is the River cafe, they have the best cheeses from all over the world (lost of locals, Americans etc too) the most wonderful preserves, honey etc, they make their own incredible rye bread...so delicious...
If you ever come this way please stop there, it is a real experience, they know they products!!!
They love what they do, it's very small and cozy, there is a cute patio if it's sunny and you won't regret it!

If you do, let me know and I'll join! ;))))

Sat, December 30, 2006 - 10:18 PMHey Storytime, I'll have to second your recommendation for the River Cafe. The owner is incredibly enthusiastic and they have a great selection you won't find elsewhere. One of my favorite cheeses they sell is Schwarz & Weiss, a blue cheese produced by an amish cooperative in Iowa. Yummy! Will let you know next time I'm in town...cheese is always better shared! =) -

Sat, December 30, 2006 - 7:28 PMThe cheese shop in Carmel! Every staff person has a depth of knowledge sorely lacking in most stores...and the free samples are fun too.

Re: Favorite Cheesemonger?
Thu, June 21, 2007 - 7:13 PMI will nominate 2 of my co-workers as my favorite cheesemongers.
Jenny & Gordon of Rainbow Grocery Co-op in SF.
Not only will they point out the real treasures in the case but they will have you rolling with laughter by the time you leave. Both are super knowledgable and have over 25 years of experience between them.
